LOCAL ISSUES, ADVICE & RESOURCES

In this section you will find details on our local councillors who support the work of the WRA. We also have also posted details of how to report local faults, from street lighting, to dog fouling, parking and blocked street gullies. There's a handy report on Warriston's 'cold calling free zone' and details on fire safety and contacting the Police Scotland community team. Finally we have links to our local clubs and societies. The Goldenacre Bowling Club, Friends of Warriston Cemetery, The Carlton Bridge Club and Heriots Rugby & Cricket Club all sit on the Warriston Estate and we hope that you enjoy participating in their activities.

No Cold Calling Zone

Please note that we are officially a No Cold Calling Zone (NCCZ) This means that if anyone simply turns up at your door without having made an appointment with you and tries to sell you something, offer a service or collect money you have the right to ask them to leave not only your property but the NCCZ. If they refuse to do so you can call the police. Cold calling is often a front for crime e.g. break-ins at a later date, casual theft on the spot, rogue trading etc

Window/Door stickers to drive home this message are available from Bill Keil, email warriston.ra@gmail.com.

By working together, we can help to rid our area of this threat.

Fire Safety in the Home

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service offers free home fire safety visits. You can easily organise such a visit. Simply, either go to:

https://www.firescotland.gov.uk/your-safety/for-householders/home-fire-safety-visit.aspx

and fill in the form online

or call: 0800 0731 999 or text "FIRE" to 80800 from your mobile phone or visit your local fire station.

Incidentally the above-noted website offers excellent fire-prevention advice such as "Night-time routines", "Home appliances" etc

Reporting Local Faults or Problems

The quickest and easiest way to report problems to the Council is to visit their website: www.edinburgh.gov.uk - register yourself as a user (assuming you are not already registered -  and then navigate to the service you require and report the fault.

Blocked Street Gullies

If you want to report blocked street gullies (drains) it is reasonably simple.

You should make a note of the number of the house most adjacent to the blocked drain and phone Clarence on: 0800 23 23 23.

You will be asked for your contact details as the person reporting the problem. Clarence has reference numbers for each gully on their database and can usually identify the gully in question using details like house number, street name and North, South East and West side of the street. They usually aim to get the problem resolved with 7 - 10 working days.

At the end of the call they give you a reference number in case there is a need to call them back. It is worth noting this down along with the date of your call in case there is a need to call them back.

Faulty Street Lights

If you wish to report a faulty street light, this is, again, reasonably simple.

Each street light has a unique code displayed on it e.g. WBN14 so you should make a note of this and then phone: 0800 23 23 23

You will be asked for your contact details as the person reporting the problem. They will need the code number and possibly street name - they will also need to know the nature of the problem.

At the end of the call they give you a reference number in case there is a need to call them back. It is worth noting this down along with the date of your call in case there is a need to call them back.

Dogs - strays, fouling, noise and wardens

Call 529 3030 to report any problems.

The above telephone numbers and more can be found in the Business Listings of the BT Phone Book under Edinburgh.

For a full A - Z list of contacts visit: www.edinburgh.gov.uk

Parking problems

At times (particularly weekends and evenings) some visitors to the neighbourhood choose to ignore double yellow lines and designated disabled bays and simply park their cars there. This is not only inconvenient it is actually dangerous. If any resident needs to summon Parking Wardens on such occasions, they should call: 556 2410 and explain where the problem is. The wardens usually come along quite quickly. If irresponsible people understand that wardens will appear and take action, they will (hopefully!) take a little more time to park their vehicles safely and considerately.

Heriots Rugby and Heriots Cricket Club

Heriot’s Rugby Club was founded in 1890, and within two decades, was able to compete with all the leading teams in the Scottish game. Confirmation of the steady rise to the upper echelons came in 1919-20 when Heriot’s won the first of several unofficial club championships, under the league system conducted by newspapers in the decades before the SRU championship was launched in 1973-74.

Heriot's Rugby https://heriotsrugbyclub.co.uk/

Heriot's Cricket Club is one of the oldest clubs in Scottish cricket, having celebrated its centenary in 1989. It was originally founded by the former pupils of George Heriot's School, but is now an open club. The club celebrated 125 years in 2014.
