‘A Wonderful day in WarristoN'

Reflections on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Street party

After several weeks of planning, the big day was here. By 10am on Sunday 5th June, the pagodas were up, the street festooned with bunting and the portaloo was in place! Most importantly it wasn’t raining. The tables and chairs went up in proper street party fashion. Once the volunteers had battled the breeze to put down the tablecloths, we were all ready to go – all we needed was people - time to get this party started!

By early afternoon people started to arrive, music was playing and soon neighbours of all ages were sharing food and drink in the sun, so great to see such community spirit. A big thank you to Scott Roberts and his barbecue and chilli making skills – he kept people fed all day

The children had a ball, thanks to Norman’s treasure hunt and Royal quiz; Iris’s “chuck the sweets into a bowl” game and ice cream cones served by Liz, Bill and Mel.

We were overwhelmed by the amount of scrummy home baking donated by talented bakers – thank you to Michele who encouraged everyone to contribute, the cake sale was a sell-out and to Sam who ensured that residents could pay by chip & pin! Thank you also to everyone who donated raffle prizes - most of them alcohol which proved to be an incentive, Scott Hastings was doing a roaring trade selling tickets! We managed to raise over £700 in funds for the WRA, a big thank you to everyone who gave so generously.

Jenny’s 3pm aerobics session was a huge hit; everyone was up on their feet, ably assisted by some of the neighbourhood kids who were throwing some serious shapes. For more evidence check out the videos on the Warriston Resident’s Facebook page

Thanks also to the organising steering group of Norman Jack, Michele Thomson, Bill Keil, Iris Fleckenstein-Seifert, Scott Roberts, Mel Aird, Sam Lea, Elizabeth Merchant, Scott Hastings and to Bill Tait who oversaw the accounts.

We were awarded £250 from The City of Edinburgh Council Lord Provost's Platinum Jubilee Street Party Fund and this was matched by Stockbridge & Inverleith Community Council. With grateful thanks to CEC & SICC for their generous contributions.

Our thanks also go to a number of suppliers who helped sponsor and supply our street party.
